Nagaland to hand over Dimapur multi-disciplinary sports complex to SAI

Dimapur: Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, on Thursday informed the state assembly that the government is exploring the possibility of handing over the Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex in Dimapur to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to facilitate completion of the remaining construction work and ensure optimal utilisation of the facility.

Responding to a starred question raised by MLA Nuklutoshi on the fifth day of the eighth session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Rio said the project had faced delays primarily due to limited financial resources and phased release of funds over the years.

The chief minister informed the House that the state government has received around Rs 140 crore so far for the project, while the total estimated requirement for its completion stands at approximately Rs 267 crore, including GST and other associated costs.

Rio said the process to hand over the sports complex to the Sports Authority of India is currently underway. He added that a second survey of the facility has already been conducted, and the only remaining step is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and SAI.

According to him, the agreement will be signed by the state sports department with the SAI regional directorate.

Highlighting infrastructure requirements, Rio noted that the stadium has been designed with a seating capacity of about 30,000 spectators, and at least three entry points would be necessary to ensure smooth access and effective crowd management during events.

He added that once the complex is handed over, SAI will assist not only in completing the pending construction work but also in ensuring its full utilisation. This would include deployment of qualified coaches and the establishment of national-standard training centres for various sports disciplines.

Following the conclusion of the day’s proceedings, Speaker Sharingain Longkumer adjourned the House until March 25.

He announced that the second phase of the eighth session of the 14th Nagaland Assembly will resume on March 26.
