A man armed with a rifle rammed a vehicle into one of the nation’s largest Reform synagogues in Michigan Thursday, according to authorities.The suspect is dead, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.The vehicle caught fire after crashing into the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township. The attacker drove through a set of doors and into a hallway where something in the vehicle ignited, a sheriff said.Investigators were still working to identify the man’s identity and a possible motive for the attack, but Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the attacker “was traveling with purpose down the hall, from my look at the video.”One security guard was injured in the crash, but their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, Bouchard said. No one else was injured in the incident. The Associated Press reports that the synagogue has multiple security officers, and that Bouchard said at least one fired at the suspect, who was found dead inside his vehicle.“We can’t say what killed him at this point but security did engage the suspect with gunfire,” the sheriff said, adding that it was possible the attacker killed himself or died some other way.FBI Director Kash Patel says the FBI is on the scene, “and responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation out of Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan.”In the minutes after the attack, smoke billowed from the synagogue, which also houses an early childhood center.“No kids or no staff were injured whatsoever,” Sheriff Bouchard said.On Thursday, the Oakland County Sheriff’s office cleared the building and about a dozen parents sprinted to get their children from an early childhood learning center inside. Law enforcement are responding. Our Jewish agencies are currently in precautionary lockdown. We ask community members to stay away from the area at this time,” The Jewish Federation of Detroit said in a statement to The Detroit News.
