Cast a vote for Jackson-area Athlete of the Week

JACKSON — As winter sports start to draw to a close, we have several athletes in and around Jackson stepping up on some big stages.

With state finals decided in gymnastics and wrestling, and basketball getting closer and closer to that stage, here are some of the top performances from the Jackson area for the past week, in our Athlete of the Week poll.

Kregel had 18 points in a regional semifinal win over Laingsburg.

Burns was the Division 4 state champion at 144 pounds, battling through an ankle injury in the final.

Smith had 25 points in the regional championship game against Summerfield, including 13 points in the first quarter. He had 19 points in the regional semifinal.

Austyn Hocter, Hanover-Horton wrestling

Hocter was the Division 4 state champion at 215 pounds, winning four matches at Ford Field, all via pin, including the title bout he won in 1:10.

Sharp took seventh at the state meet in the all-around. She tied for fifth in the floor routine and took 10th on the bars.

Minix had 19 points and seven steals in a district win over Jonesville. In Friday’s district title game win over Hudson, she had nine points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
