The Government intends that Luís Encarnação, together with the mayors of Lisbon, Almada and Vila Nova de Gaia, represent Portuguese municipalities on the European Union’s Committee of the Regions (Committee) between 2025 and 2030.
The Committee in question is an advisory body with the power to issue decisions on mandatory and optional consultations laid down in treaties.
To be selected for the position, Committee members must hold an electoral mandate, either at the regional or local level, and be accountable to an elected assembly. Members must represent the interests of their authorities before the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament.
Each Member State forms a national delegation, the size of which depends on that country’s population and reflects the political, geographical, regional, and local balance of that country.
