MANZINI – The Government of Eswatini has strengthened healthcare services at Manzini Government Hospital through the installation of a modern CT scanner valued at E11.2 million and the renovation of key hospital departments.
The new developments were officially handed over on March 6, 2026 by the Ministry of Health, led by Minister of Health Mduduzi Matsebula, during a ceremony attended by government officials, hospital management and representatives from the Republic of China (Taiwan).
The major investment included the commissioning of the CT scan machine as well as the rehabilitation of the hospital’s pharmacy and radiology departments. The improvements are expected to significantly enhance diagnostic services and overall patient care at one of the country’s busiest referral hospitals.
The CT scanner was donated by the Republic of China (Taiwan) as part of continued cooperation between the two nations in strengthening healthcare services in Eswatini. The advanced equipment will allow medical professionals to detect serious health conditions more quickly and accurately.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Minister Matsebula said the installation of the CT scanner represents an important step in improving the country’s diagnostic capacity.
He explained that the equipment will help doctors detect illnesses earlier and make more informed treatment decisions. Previously, many patients requiring specialised imaging had to travel to Mbabane Government Hospital for CT scans.
“The provision of this CT scanner costing E11.2 million marks a major step forward in strengthening our healthcare system. Through this technology, Manzini Government Hospital will improve early diagnosis and enhance patient care,” said the minister.
In addition to the CT scanner, government invested approximately E2.9 million in the renovation of the pharmacy and radiology departments. The upgrades included improved medicine storage facilities, installation of cooling systems, enhanced security features and the expansion of dispensing areas.
Specialised rooms were also prepared to house the CT scanner to ensure the facility meets all operational and safety standards required for advanced medical imaging equipment.
Hospital management said the redesigned pharmacy will improve the storage and management of medicines while also creating a more organised and efficient working environment for healthcare workers.
Patients are also expected to benefit from improved service flow and a more comfortable experience when collecting medication.
Taiwan’s representatives said the project demonstrates the strong partnership between Eswatini and Taiwan in promoting quality healthcare and improving access to modern medical services.
The new CT scanner is expected to assist in the early detection of diseases such as cancer, heart conditions and internal injuries, ultimately improving treatment outcomes and strengthening healthcare delivery for emaSwati across the country.
