Public Prosecution issues warning over immodest appearance in public

Muscat – Public Prosecution issued a formal reminder to the public regarding the legal requirements for modest conduct and attire in communal spaces. According to a statement released under the Seraj Ramadan initiative, appearing on public roads or in public places in a manner deemed immodest or contrary to established societal traditions and customs constitutes a legal offence. This regulation is strictly enforced under Article (294/a) of the Oman Penal Code to ensure respect for the nation’s cultural heritage.

Individuals found to be in violation of these standards face significant legal consequences as outlined by the judicial authorities. The penalties for such offences include a term of imprisonment for up to three months or a financial penalty of RO300. In some instances, the court may choose to apply both the custodial sentence and the fine simultaneously. The authorities have encouraged all residents and visitors to familiarise themselves with these laws to maintain the social fabric and respect local sensitivities.
