Six Malekula Communities to Receive Solar Power

The “Delighting Everyone” Solar Project 2026 was officially launched yesterday, supporting the Government’s 2030 target of achieving 100 percent renewable energy use nationwide.

The project will initially serve over four communities on Malekula Island, with plans to expand to additional communities in the north.

Minister for Climate Change Ralph Regenvanu welcomed the initiative, saying it aligns with Vanuatu’s National Energy Road Map, which aims to provide electricity access to 100 percent of the population by 2030.

He acknowledged that there remains a significant gap between national goals and current capacity, noting that government continues to work on expanding energy grids to reach more rural communities.

The Minister commended Radiant Technology for its vision and business model, describing it as well-suited to Vanuatu’s energy needs.

Chief Executive Officer of the Vanuatu Foreign Investment Promotion Agency, Raymond Vuti, said discussions and groundwork for the project have been ongoing for six years. He encouraged all relevant government departments to collaborate closely to ensure the project’s success, not only in Malekula but also in Santo and other provinces.

The project is supported by Japanese investors, including Toshiba and Kyo Shipping Co Limited.

Japanese Ambassador to Vanuatu, His Excellency Noahisa Okisa, expressed his support, saying the initiative will bring much-needed electricity to rural communities.

Around five to six communities in Malekula are expected to benefit from the initial phase of the solar project, with potential expansion to other northern islands in the future.
