Orioles’ Jackson Holliday to begin hitting with surgically repaired hand

SARASOTA, Fla. — Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday continues to make progress in his rehab from a hand injury that’s expected to sideline him for opening day later this month.

Holliday broke the hamate bone in his right hand while taking swings during a live bullpen session in February. The club’s featured second baseman then successfully underwent surgery to remove the fractured hook-shaped bone.

On Wednesday, Holliday said he plans to begin swinging with both hands later in the week. Throughout the early parts of his rehab, Holliday had gone through his swinging motion with just his left hand.

Holliday, 22, also recently started throwing again from the backfields at the team’s spring complex.

The No. 1 pick in the 2022 MLB draft watched his teammates participate in infield drills Wednesday morning, observing alongside manager Craig Albernaz, before Holliday went through his own individual workout under the watchful eyes of infield coach Miguel Cairo.

Holliday fielded dozens of ground balls and also worked on his backhand flips. Earlier in the morning, Holliday also played pingpong with Heston Kjerstad inside the Orioles’ clubhouse, with some of his serves drawing playful applause from nearby teammates.

Holliday hit .242 with a team-best 17 home runs in his first full major league season in 2025. Holliday also ranked second in stolen bases (17) behind shortstop Gunnar Henderson (30).

With Holliday sidelined, the Orioles started Thairo Estrada at second base on Wednesday in a Grapefruit League contest against the Houston Astros. Utility players Blaze Alexander and Jeremiah Jackson also have logged reps at the position.
