FESSENDEN (NewsDakota)- February 9, 2023 against Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier. That had been the last regular season region win for the Carrington boys basketball program.
Until Monday night.
On the night the Cards got junior Andrew Matt back from an injury suffered during football season, Carrington rolled to a 67-44 win over Harvey/Wells County to clinch the 7-seed in next week’s Region 2A Tournament in Mayville.
The game lacked drama as the Cards (6-14, 2-10 Region 2A) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and with Carrington up 15-8, the six-foot-seven inch junior checked in for the first time this season. Carrington head coach Randy Hooey said after the game that he knew for around a week that Matt would return, but asked his team to keep it quiet. With the extra spark and with the Hornets (7-15, 2-12 Region 2A) playing with an injured Nixon Buchmiller playing through the pain, Carrington led 38-21 at the break behind fifteen first-half points from Maddox McIlonie
In the third quarter, Taylen Mehring buried a pair of threes on his way to a game-high sixteen points as the Cardinals led by fifteen after three. The fourth quarter belonged to Alec Threadgold, who scored eight of his ten points in the fourth with the game beyond doubt. Overall, Carrington had six players with at least seven points.
The Cardinals conclude their regular season on Wednesday, hosting the Grafton Spoilers, with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal & KDAK The Cardinal on YouTube beginning at 1:45pm.
