Grass fire near Capitan forces RV park evacuation

CAPITAN, N.M. – A grass fire near US Highway 380 has consumed 10 acres, prompting evacuations and road closures.

The fire started just after 2:30 p.m. on Monday, near MM 86 on US Highway 380. Hailey Hill RV Park has been evacuated. Residents in Capitan and nearby areas are advised of heavy smoke.

Capitan Fire Department, Lincoln Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, State Forestry, and the Office of Emergency Services are responding to the fire. The fire is burning through grass, pinon, and juniper.

The Lincoln County Office of Emergency Services says “forward progress on the fire has been stopped” in an update at 3:05 p.m. Highway 380 has since been reopened.
