EVERETT — Two people are dead and three people were rescued Tuesday night after a police pursuit ended with a suspect vehicle driving into the water near the Edmonds ferry terminal.

At approximately 11:10 p.m Tuesday night, a Washington State Patrol trooper noticed a Mini Cooper driving 79 in a 60 mph speed zone south on I-5 near milepost 189, according to spokesperson Kelsey Harding. The trooper began a pursuit before terminating it about a minute later.

A few minutes later, a Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputy noticed the same Mini Cooper driving at 100 mph and weaving in and out of traffic on southbound I-5, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Courtney O’Keefe.

When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle continued driving recklessly southbound on I-5 at approximately 120 mph, O’Keefe said. The suspect took the 196th Street SW exit where the pursuit continued into Mountlake Terrace, and then Edmonds. After losing sight of the vehicle, the deputy noticed the crossing arms at the ferry terminal were destroyed, and then he heard yelling from the water, O’Keefe said in a press release.

Three people were rescued from the water, O’Keefe said. The Snohomish County Dive Team recovered two people who had died in the water, the press release said. The three rescued people were treated at the scene and transferred to Harborview Medical Center.
