The Luganville Municipal Council has officially kick-started its Beautification Plan, marking what leaders describe as a historic moment for the town.
Yesterday, residents witnessed Mayor Hon. John Boe Mavutu and Luganville MP Hon. Matai Seremaiah plant the first two flowers along the pavement separating the main road in Luganville’s CBD — symbolizing the beginning of the initiative.
Town Clerk Raynold Surmat said the first step of the beautification plan is being carried out while the council awaits completion of remaining minor works by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
He explained that the flower planting is part of the municipality’s long-term vision to ensure Luganville is beautified now and into the future. He added that businesses and residents will also be encouraged to plant flowers around their properties as part of the broader plan.
Leaders say the initiative comes at an important time as Sanma Province and Luganville town move toward becoming Vanuatu’s economic hub. With infrastructure development increasing, they believe it is necessary to improve the town’s appearance to match its growing status.
Minister responsible for municipalities, Hon. Andrew Solomon Napuat, welcomed the efforts of Luganville and Sanma leaders, praising their teamwork in implementing the beautification program. He said improving the town’s appearance will help attract more tourists and encourage residents to work together in supporting government development plans.
Students from various schools in Luganville, LMC staff, and other stakeholders joined the event, helping plant flowers as part of the first phase of the project.
Minister Napuat commended the leadership shown by Luganville and Sanma Province, saying their collaboration demonstrates a strong commitment to positioning the province as the country’s economic hub.
