Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar (Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.) yelled out several times during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech, prompting a scolding from Trump.
“You should be ashamed,” Omar called out while Trump slammed cities that haven’t cooperated with federal immigration officers. “You have killed Americans,” she added, making an apparent reference to federal agents fatally shooting two people in Minnesota in recent weeks.
“You should be ashamed of yourself for not standing up,” Trump replied. Sanctuary cities, he continued, are “blocking the removal of these people out of our country, and you should be ashamed of yourselves.”
Tlaib yelled out that Americans “saw the videos” of agents killing Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota. “You are killing Americans,” she echoed Omar. “Alex wasn’t a criminal,” she also yelled, referring to Pretti.
“You’re the most corrupt president!” she called out after Trump proposed legislation to crack down on lawmakers engaging in insider trading.
Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) joined in, yelling out to Trump: “How about you first?”
Omar also yelled at Trump when he claimed, without any evidence, that Minnesota’s Somali community had stolen $19 billion from American taxpayers.
“That’s a lie,” Omar, the first Somali American in Congress, called out.
Both Omar and Tlaib both exited the chamber later during Trump’s speech.
