Prince George’s County Del. Adrian Boafo today scored his second campaign endorsement from another member of Maryland’s Democratic establishment: U.S. Rep. Sarah Elfreth.
Elfreth is the second member of Maryland’s congressional delegation to endorse Boafo, who is running to succeed U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer in Maryland’s fifth congressional district. Hoyer endorsed Boafo shortly after announcing that he won’t seek reelection at the end of his term.
The endorsement comes after the deadline to be on the 2026 Maryland election ballots ended Tuesday.
Boafo is the only Democratic candidate with endorsements from current members of Maryland’s congressional delegation.
The Prince George’s County delegate will “build on his legislative success to fight to lower costs, rebuild the federal workforce, and protect Social Security, Medicare, and SNAP,” Elfreth said in an exclusive statement to The Baltimore Sun.
Elfreth, who said she worked with Boafo during her time in the Maryland State Senate, also called him a “fighter” and someone whose “experience and energy is exactly what we need in Congress.”
“President Trump’s relentless attacks on Maryland and our hardworking federal workers requires a delegation of active, dedicated partners in Washington who are ready to work on day one,” Elfreth said.
Boafo, who is 31 years old, is among a younger generation of candidates looking to usher in generational change. The Democratic base has particularly scrutinized lawmaker age since 2024 when former President Joe Biden abandoned his reelection campaign amid party concerns over his age, a decision many Democrats’ believe led to their loss of the 2024 presidential election. Hoyer’s retirement, who at 86 years old is the longest-serving member of the delegation, ensured Southern Maryland would be a part of the generational change.
Boafo said he’s grateful for Elfreth’s endorsement, pledging to continue fighting for working families and all Marylanders. “She understands the real-world impact policies in Washington have on our communities,” he said in a statement. “I’ve stood with her to protect immigrant communities, lower costs for Marylanders, and deliver opportunities for our residents at the state and federal levels.”
Some of Boafo’s primary challengers include Prince George’s County Del. Nicole Williams, Councilwoman Wala Blegay, former Jan. 6 Capitol officer Harry Dunn, and Maryland state Sen. Arthur Ellis, among a host of other candidates.
Boafo, who was once Hoyer’s campaign manager, also has a track record as a prolific fundraiser, having launched in 2024 WinGen PAC, a federal PAC that raised more than $600,000 in 2024 to support Democratic candidates across the country.
