City officials in New Haven have found nearly 1,000 drivers have illegally passed school buses in less than two weeks since a new safety program was initiated.

The School Bus Safety Program was put into effect on Jan. 30 and involves automated cameras that capture motorists who pass a bus while its lights are flashing and its stop arm is activated, according to the Mayor’s Office.

City officials said they identified 945 violations in the first 12 days of the program being implemented. On average, they have found between 125 to 150 violations occurring every day, the Mayor’s Office said.

As the cameras are still being installed on buses, officials have implemented a 30-day warning period. So far, 574 warning letters have been sent out. The rest of the alleged violators should be receiving a letter soon, officials said.

City officials said 300 buses have been outfitted with the automated cameras so far. All 350 buses are expected to have the cameras by March 1, when the warning period concludes.

After the warning period, drivers will be issued a $250 ticket.

Tickets will be received in the mail and must be paid or contested, officials said.
