House of Representatives calls for the adoption of agricultural methods resistant to drought and dust storms

Sebha – The Libyan House of Representatives called for adopting innovative agricultural methods. This call came from a specialized workshop that concluded Monday in Sebha. The goal is to combat drought and sandstorms in southern regions. This is part of efforts to boost sustainable adaptation to climate change. It also aims to protect natural resources.

The House’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee organized the meeting. The topic was “Promoting Sustainable Adaptation to Climate Change in Southern Libya.” It used a nexus approach for water, energy, food, and ecosystems. The event lasted two days. Experts, researchers, and municipal representatives participated.

Wael Al-Ashibi is the Foreign Affairs Committee official in charge of the meeting. He told a LANA reporter that the meeting offered a key discussion platform. It addressed major environmental and climate challenges in southern Libya. Solutions were proposed to lessen the impacts of drought, water scarcity, and sandstorms. These solutions consider the unique nature of the southern regions.

The meeting recommendations included supporting the agricultural sector. Agriculture is the most affected by climate change. They also recommended rationalizing water consumption in farming and other uses. Enhancing local research and studies was advised to monitor climate change impacts. Adopting drought and sandstorm-resistant agricultural methods was another recommendation. Expanding renewable energy use was also suggested. Building early warning and monitoring systems for natural disasters was proposed. Finally, they recommended boosting coordination among national bodies and leveraging international expertise.

Al-Ashibi affirmed that the meeting’s outcomes will help review government policies. They will also propose necessary legislative reforms. This will support state efforts to adapt to climate change impacts. It will also achieve greater environmental sustainability in southern Libya.
