De Freitas heads new SLYC leadership team

Josh De Freitas has taken over the leadership of the Saint Lucia Yacht Club (SLYC) after being elected during the SLYC’s Annual General Meeting held on Sunday, January 25.

De Freitas, a former secretary, replaces Peter Lang who has served as Commodore since 2018 at the oldest active club on the island, with a history spanning more than 60 years.

While Timothy Moffat remains as vice-commodore, the rest of the leadership team has been shaken up.

Experienced sailor and coach Fredric Sweeney takes over as rear commodore, Joel Wallace is the new treasurer, while Zandra Perreira takes up the position of secretary.

De Freitas expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to Lang for his years of dedicated leadership, service, and unwavering support of the club.

His tenure was recognised as instrumental in strengthening the club’s operations, membership, and role within Saint Lucia’s sailing community. “Thank you for your dedicated service, leadership, and the significant contributions you have made to our club’s success,” a release from the club stated..

SLYC hosts regular training and competition in squash, as well as weekly sailing lessons at its Rodney Bay location. The club hosts the Mango Bowl Regatta every November, and competes in regional regattas, such as Schoelcher Nautical Week in Martinique.
