Congress launches ‘Time for Change’ campaign, targets CM

Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Tuesday launched its statewide campaign ‘Homoy Poribortonor’ (Time for Change) with the release of a pamphlet titled ‘Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma?’, outlining a series of allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, including corruption, illegal land acquisition, misuse of power, and political betrayal.

The campaign was unveiled at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati in the presence of APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh, former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, MPs Rokibul Hussain and Pradyut Bordoloi, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, and several senior party leaders.

At the press conference, the APCC screened a video compilation highlighting alleged misgovernance by the chief minister, including claims of disproportionate wealth accumulation by Sarma and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, and alleged involvement in multiple scams such as Saradha, Louis Berger, the NC Hills scam, and syndicates related to sand, coal and supari.

The pamphlet also alleges large-scale land acquisitions across districts such as Sualkuchi, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Kaliabor and Guwahati, misuse of government machinery for family business expansion, rising state debt, closure of schools, expansion of liquor outlets, and unfulfilled promises such as granting ST status.

Gogoi claimed that around 12,000 bighas of land have allegedly been accumulated by the chief minister and his family, including cases where agricultural land was purportedly converted into industrial or commercial use.

He announced a missed-call helpline (9133400200) and a website for citizens to submit documents or information, which the party said would be verified and made public.

Gogoi further accused Sarma of betraying former leaders such as Tarun Gogoi and Sarbananda Sonowal, as well as student bodies and the people of Assam.

Debabrata Saikia alleged collapse of the education and health sectors and claimed the PWD department was being misused to fund elections. Jitendra Singh accused Sarma of reducing governance to a “family-controlled enterprise,” while Baghel described the present government’s five-year tenure as one of “betrayal.”

In his concluding remarks, Gogoi referred to the family of singer Zubeen Garg writing to the Prime Minister’s Office seeking justice, saying the chief minister should also take the Prime Minister to “Zubeen Khetra to see the pain this regime has caused.”
