Shanty Sigrah Asher, from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), has recently joined The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Micronesia and Polynesia as FSM Government Relations and Partnership Manager.
Before joining TNC, Shanty built a career in law, public service, and community leadership in Hawai’i. She holds advanced degrees in law and criminal justice and has worked in government programs focused on community development and public participation. She has also served in leadership roles across education, legal services, and Pacific community organizations. These experiences shaped her commitment to inclusive decision-making and equitable development.
After several years in Hawai’i, Shanty decided to return home to FSM. She saw joining TNC as an opportunity to reconnect with her roots, learn more about natural resource management, and apply her experience to support island communities. She now helps connect TNC’s technical and scientific teams with government partners, supporting transparent decision-making and long-term stewardship of natural resources. Her work focuses on ensuring conservation efforts are locally led and aligned with communities’ priorities.
“Coming home and doing work that supports our islands and our people feels deeply meaningful,” said Shanty. “As a mother, I often think about the world we leave our children, and I want to help protect our natural resources so future generations can thrive.”
