Meteorologist U Win Naing forecast that this year’s monsoon may arrive earlier than normal, and rainfall in various states and regions during May and June could exceed the annual average level.
The 2026 monsoon entry is expected to be a few days earlier than 15 May, with heavy rain likely to develop after 20 May.
“The monsoon onset could be a few days earlier than the usual which is 15 May. Heavy rain is expected only after 20 May. Depending on storm conditions in the Bay of Bengal, rain will arrive sooner or later. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) forecast on Meteoblue – Seasonal Forecast, rainfall in some states and regions is expected to be above the average in May and June,” he said.
In April, light rain of 5 mm to 10 mm (0.2 to 0.4 inches) is expected in eastern Shan, Bago, and Kayin. In May, rainfall is predicted to exceed annual averages in Sagaing, Mandalay, Shan (South and East), Nay Pyi Taw, Southeastern Magway, Bago, Ayeyawady, Yangon, Mon, Kayin, and Tanintharyi. In June, Sagaing, Mandalay, Kachin, Shan, Nay Pyi Taw, Southeastern Magway, Bago, Ayeyawady, Yangon, Mon, Kayin, and Tanintharyi may see above-average rainfalls, he said.
