Vehicular movement on the Chandmari Flyover in Guwahati has been completely suspended from January 30 following an announcement by the Guwahati Traffic Police on Thursday. The closure has been imposed due to ongoing construction work on the Maharaj Prithu Flyover, which is planned to connect to the Chandmari stretch near Gopinath Bordoloi Road.
According to a fresh traffic advisory, the Chandmari Flyover will remain closed to all vehicles until the construction work is completed. Authorities stated that the decision was taken in the interest of junction development and public safety, as heavy construction activity is currently underway in the area.
Commuters have been advised to avoid the affected stretch and follow the designated diversion routes to reduce congestion and ensure smoother traffic flow in the surrounding localities. Vehicles approaching from the Zoo Road side have been directed to take Apurba Sinha Path or Rajgarh Road. From Rajgarh Road, commuters can proceed via South Sarania Path, GS Road, Dr B Borooah Road and GNB Road.
Traffic coming from the Chandmari side has been advised to move towards Bamunimaidam through the MRD Road. Further diversion options are available via Hatigarh Chariali using Railway Colony Road or through the Noonmati–Mathgharia route.
Special arrangements have been introduced for passenger and commercial vehicles during the closure. City buses and electric buses travelling from Adabari towards GNB Road and MRD Road will be diverted via the Patharquarry Roundabout. Buses arriving from the Ganeshguri side will be allowed to proceed up to Zoo Road Tiniali, before being rerouted towards Adabari through MT Road and Mathgharia.
Metro share taxis, locally known as Magic vehicles, operating from Noonmati will function only up to the Chandmari Police Point during the closure period. These vehicles will take a U-turn on MRD Road and return towards Noonmati, operating as shuttle services to help reduce congestion at the junction.
To further ease traffic pressure, all city buses have been instructed to operate in an orderly manner, keep to the left lane at all times and refrain from overtaking. Officials said the traffic restrictions and diversion plan were finalised after consultations with all relevant stakeholders at a special Regional Transport Authority meeting held on January 29.
The advisory follows severe traffic congestion in Guwahati on Thursday, when both lanes of the Chandmari Flyover were abruptly blocked due to construction related to the MRD Road Flyover. The sudden closure, reportedly implemented without prior public notification, led to heavy congestion across Chandmari, Zoo Road, Rajgarh and nearby areas.
The incident highlighted gaps in planning and execution by the Public Works Department and the contractor involved in the project, as well as shortcomings in coordination with the traffic police. Commuters stranded for hours during the disruption raised concerns over the lack of advance communication.
