Croatia’s women’s national water polo team have achieved their first major objective at the European Championship in Funchal, Portugal, with a crucial 10–8 victory over Serbia in the final round of Group C.

The win, secured in the third and decisive group match, saw Croatia overcome their direct rivals for second place and confirm progression to the next phase of the competition.

As a result, the Croatian team have advanced to the championship round, where they will compete for places one to eight, the elite tier of European women’s water polo.

This result is particularly significant as it ensures Croatia have matched their best-ever performances at the European Championships.

The national team previously finished eighth in 2010, 2022 and 2024, and now have the opportunity to improve on that record as the tournament continues.

Croatia were led by an outstanding individual display from Jelena Butić, who scored four goals and played a decisive role in the team’s attacking success.
