US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will not attend the next round of talks with Russia and Ukraine, although there “might be” a US presence.

Details: Rubio initially referred to the next round of talks, which is expected to take place on Sunday 1 February, as a bilateral meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian teams, but he later clarified that US representatives may be present, though not the key negotiators, Witkoff and Kushner.

Background:

• During the hearing, Rubio also described the future status of Donbas as one of the most difficult issues of the peace talks – one the sides have not yet come close to resolving.

• Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on 26 January that preparations are underway for the next meeting of the negotiating teams from Ukraine, the US and Russia, which is planned for Sunday 1 February.
