South Melbourne cruise past Hekari to maintain perfect OFC Start

South Melbourne FC continued their perfect start to the OFC Pro League over the weekend with a dominant 5–0 victory over PNG Hekari FC at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, wrapping up the opening round of the competition.

South Melbourne were in control from the outset, scoring three first-half goals to put the match beyond doubt.

Former A-League striker Jordan Swibel led the charge with a brace in his first start for the club.

The win sees Hellas claim the maximum six points from their opening two matches, leaving them as one of only two unbeaten teams in the competition alongside Auckland FC.

PNG Hekari FC were without suspended striker Ati Kepo following his red card in the opening match, prompting coach Marcos Gusmão to make two changes, with Rex Naime and Kasum Gabriel brought into the starting lineup. South Melbourne coach Sinisa Cohadzic also made two changes, most notably handing Swibel a starting role up front.

After being held for long periods by Tahiti United in their opening fixture, South Melbourne asserted themselves early. The breakthrough came in the seventh minute when Tommy Giannakopoulos headed home from a Jack Painter-Andrews cross. Moments later, Swibel doubled the lead, guiding Yuki Uchida’s delivery into the net with his chest.

Hekari responded with some urgency, as Naime narrowly missed the target with a header from a free kick, while John Orobulu dragged a long-range effort wide.

However, South Melbourne struck again just before half-time, with Max Mikkola finishing from close range after meeting a cross from the left. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was awarded following a VAR review.
