Tripura crosses 7 MW mark in rooftop solar power generation

Agartala: Tripura has crossed the 7 megawatt (MW) mark in rooftop solar power generation under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, officials said on Saturday.

According to Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), electricity generated through rooftop solar installations across the state has now exceeded 7 MW since the launch of the centrally sponsored scheme. The increase has been driven by rising consumer participation in the programme, which promotes household-level solar power generation.

TSECL officials said that 17,601 electricity consumers in Tripura have registered under the scheme so far. Of these, rooftop solar installations have been completed at 2,061 households, while 1,746 beneficiaries have received government subsidies. Under the scheme, eligible consumers can avail of subsidies of up to Rs 85,800 for installing rooftop solar systems.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, the programme aims to reduce household electricity expenses and expand the use of renewable energy. Consumers can meet their electricity requirements through rooftop solar panels and export surplus power to the grid.

Officials noted that even a 1 kilowatt rooftop solar plant can generate about 100 units of electricity per month, generally sufficient for a typical household. Surplus electricity fed into the grid provides additional financial returns through net metering.

TSECL has been providing technical assistance, facilitating grid connectivity and conducting awareness programmes to support the scheme. The state has set a target of increasing rooftop solar generation capacity to 50 MW within the next year, which would significantly enhance Tripura’s renewable energy base and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.

Consumers are urged to register under the scheme through the designated government portal or local TSECL offices, officials added.
