ON THIS DAY IN OUR HISTORY: Link up with the U.S.

Port Moresby was linked with Washington on Friday morning to hear about the inauguration of the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter.

The link was arranged by the United States Information Agency in Washington.

More than 20 Government and private officials went to the American Embassy in Port Moresby to ask the Papua New Guinea Ambassador to the United States, Mr Paulias Matane, and a political observer, Professor Wayne, questions about the inauguration.

Professor Wayne reported that President Carter walked hand in hand with his wife the two kilometres from the Capitol to the White House.

He said the previous Presidents had all travelled in a Presidential car.

President Carter sent a special message to the foreign audiences, including PNG, during the inauguration.
