The Croatian government has issued its first official response to US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose trade tariffs on European allies over Greenland, calling for a united and coordinated European position and reaffirming support for Denmark’s sovereignty.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Croatian government stressed that NATO allies must respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, clearly stating that Greenland is part of Denmark.

“The position of the Croatian government is clear: allies within NATO must respect one another’s principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, and Greenland is part of Denmark.

We advocate a unified and coordinated European position should such US announcements materialize. This will be discussed at a meeting of EU Member State representatives at ambassadorial level in Brussels, as well as at the meeting of foreign ministers on Monday.

With regard to US concerns related to security in the Arctic region we believe that dialogue can lead to a solution that guarantees security for the United States of America while ensuring full respect for and protection of Denmark territorial integrity, taking into account the fact that Greenland is part of NATO,” the statement said.

Trump threatens tariffs over Greenland stance

The reaction follows an announcement by President Trump on Saturday that the United States would introduce tariffs against eight European countries that have decided to station military personnel in Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory that Trump has repeatedly claimed the US should acquire.

The countries named include Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland. Slovenia has also confirmed it will send two military officers to Greenland; however, it has not yet been included in the proposed US sanctions.

Trump has revived his interest in Greenland since the beginning of the year, arguing that the island’s strategic location in the Arctic and its vast mineral resources make it crucial for US national security.
