Agartala: Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday said the state government has appealed to the Centre to sanction 15 additional Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) to strengthen education and protect the cultural heritage of the tribal population.
The chief minister was speaking at the inauguration of four new school buildings constructed at a cost of Rs 20 crore in Mohanpur subdivision of West Tripura district.
“Tripura had only four Eklavya Model Residential Schools. After the BJP government came to power, 21 new such academic institutions were sanctioned for the state,” Saha said.
“So far, 12 schools have started functioning while six of them are going to start functioning from March this year. The rest of the others will be ready by next year,” he added.
Saha said the state has requested the Centre to relax eligibility norms for setting up EMRS in certain blocks.
“We have plans to have at least one such institution in all Rural Development Blocks of the state,” he said.
However, he pointed out that existing criteria require blocks to have either 50 per cent tribal population or a minimum of 20,000 tribal inhabitants.
“During my last Delhi visit, I have urged the Centre to relax these criteria for Tripura so that we can set up 15 more such schools in tribal-dominated blocks,” the chief minister said.
