Howard County game balls: Recognizing 10 standout high school athletes (Dec. 22-Jan. 11)

Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize several Howard County athletes with game balls for their performances over the course of the week.

Each week, the community will have an opportunity to vote on who they believe should receive the top game ball as Player of the Week. The results of each poll will be published in the following week’s game balls.

Last week’s results

Oakland Mills girls basketball’s Chloe Grenway was chosen as the athlete of the week for Dec. 5-20 with 55.05% of the vote, followed by Wilde Lake girls basketball’s Maggie Shidle (16.82%) and Marriotts Ridge’s Aaron Hammann (12.54%).

Grenway was initially selected after surpassing 1,000 career points in the Scorpions win over Marriotts Ridge on Dec. 15.

Bryce Adkins, Long Reach, indoor track and field

Adkins won the shot put at the third Howard County meet of the season (51 feet, 1 1/4 inches) which was a new personal record and the furthest distance this season from a county thrower, according to athletic.net. He also was the runner-up in the shotput at the Bullseye’s Ice Track and Field Invitational where 41 different schools participated.

Jaidyn Augustine, Marriotts Ridge, indoor track and field

Augustine excelled at the third Howard County meet of the season in multiple events. She won the triple jump (34 feet, 8 inches) and was the runner-up in the 55-meter dash (7.46 seconds).

Quinn Corkeron, Wilde Lake, girls basketball

A senior and four-year starter, Corkeron is averaging 12.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3 steals per game and is the team leader in made 3-pointers with 18 through nine games.

Femi Fekoya, Reservoir, indoor track and field

Fekoya displayed his sprinting prowess on a big stage at the Apple Bank Hispanic Games in New York City. He won the 55 with a personal record time of 6.41 seconds, which is the fastest time of any Howard County athlete in the event this season, according to athletic.net.

Alana Harrison, Howard, girls basketball

Harrison is a versatile offensive threat for the Lions and emerging into a premier scorer. She scored a season-high 27 points on Friday in a 61-39 win over River Hill and has scored 25 or more points four times. Through 10 games, Harrison is the team leader in points (17.5) and rebounds per game (7.2).

Josh Hurd, Long Reach, boys basketball

Only a sophomore, Hurd has quickly developed into a main offensive option for the Lightning. He has scored over 20 points in four consecutive games and is a dynamic frontcourt player who is averaging 21 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

Demarcus Lamont, Atholton, boys basketball

Lamont is a driving force in Atholton’s four-game winning streak. In the last three games, he is averaging a double-double (12 points and 10.7 rebounds) and making his impact felt all over the floor.

Sarah Opara-Murambiwa, Hammond, indoor track and field

Opara-Murambiwa won the 55-meter hurdles at the third Howard County meet of the season (8.83). She also ran a blazing 8.67 seconds at the Big Apple Hispanic Games, which set a new personal record and is the fastest time by a Howard County female in the event this season, according to athletic.net.

Daniel Ndiritu, Oakland Mills, boys basketball

Ndiritu is a vital component of the Scorpions’ turnaround and rapid ascension into one of Howard County’s best teams. Thus far, he is averaging a team-high 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals per game.

Blake Willingham, Marriotts Ridge, boys basketball

Willingham is a prolific 3-pointer shooter and has made 36 shots from behind the arc in 10 games. He is averaging 15.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Willingham has also been disruptive defensively and is averaging four steals per game.
