Guwahati: Authorities at the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden have rolled out round-the-clock winter protection measures to safeguard animals from falling temperatures, officials said.
The zoo has installed heaters, bedding and additional lighting across several enclosures, with big cats such as lions and tigers kept under continuous heating. Officials said animals are also exposed to sunlight during morning hours, while heated shelters have been arranged for nighttime to maintain warmth.
Head animal keeper Rajani Kanta Deka said the measures were implemented on the directions of the zoo director. He added that electric bulbs have been placed in enclosures housing reptiles, birds and other temperature-sensitive species to ensure stable conditions during colder hours.
Authorities have also laid stubble and blankets on enclosure floors to provide insulation and minimise contact with cold surfaces, particularly for animals such as tortoises that require extra protection. Most enclosures now use a combination of heating devices and bedding to prevent cold-related stress, officials said.
Alongside winter care, the zoo has recorded steady breeding activity in recent months. Officials said several species have given birth, including a giraffe calf, tiger cubs and rhino calves. Two rhino calves have already been born, with more births expected by the end of the year.
The zoo is also continuing animal exchange programmes, while discussions are underway with the Central Zoo Authority to introduce new species such as zebras and kangaroos.
Located in the heart of Guwahati, the Assam State Zoo spans about 175 hectares, with its adjoining botanical garden covering another 82 hectares, making it one of the city’s largest green spaces.
