Portugal breaks daily electricity consumption record

After the national grid operator announced that a daily consumption record of 186.2 GWh was registered on Tuesday, 6 January — surpassing the previous high of 185.1 GWh, reached on 13 January 2021 — the upward trend continued in the following days.

On Wednesday, daily consumption set another record, reaching 188.1 GWh. On Thursday, 8 January, the National Electricity System recorded a new record, with consumption reaching 192.3 GWh.

The data confirm an unprecedented sequence of consecutive daily electricity consumption records in Portugal, coinciding with very low temperatures. The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a yellow warning on Sunday for nine districts in mainland Portugal due to cold weather. Meanwhile, the warnings have already been lifted.

Electricity consumption supplied from the public grid reached its highest-ever level in the National Electricity System in 2025, according to data released by Aneel on 1 January.

Consumption was 53.1 TWh (Terawatt-hour) for the year as a whole, 3.2% higher than the previous year and 2.3% higher after adjusting for temperature and the number of working days.

Renewable production reached 37 TWh, a new historical high, corresponding to 68% of consumption, “in line with the 70% recorded in the previous year, even considering the technical restrictions imposed on electricity production to safeguard the security of supply of the National Electricity System (SEN) in the period immediately following the blackout of 28 April,” REN detailed.
