Zubeen Garg family seeks special prosecutor, fast-track trial in death case

Guwahati: The family members of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg have written a formal letter on Tuesday to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, seeking urgent steps to ensure justice in connection with the singer’s death in Singapore last year.

The letter has been jointly signed by Garima Saikia Garg (wife), Dr. Palmee Borthakur (sister) and Manoj Borthakur (uncle) of the singer.

Addressed directly to the Chief Minister, the family appealed for stronger legal intervention, including the constitution of a Special Public Prosecutor Team and measures to expedite the trial through a special court mechanism.

In the letter, the family acknowledged that an SIT has already been formed and that the investigation process is underway. However, they stressed that given the seriousness of the allegations and the public importance of the case, the prosecution must be reinforced with highly experienced and senior advocates to effectively present the case and counter the defence.

The family expressed concern that the legal process may become prolonged, noting that around 34 witnesses are expected to testify. They cautioned that delays could weaken public confidence and dilute the pursuit of justice in a case involving one of Assam’s most revered cultural icons.

Referring to earlier assurances from authorities that justice would be delivered, the family urged the state government to now take concrete and time bound steps, including providing adequate logistics and institutional support to the prosecution.

Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore had sent shockwaves across Assam and the Northeast, triggering widespread public grief and calls for transparency.

The family reiterated their faith in the judiciary , stating that swift and decisive action is essential not only for justice to Zubeen Garg but also to uphold public trust in the justice system.
