New car registrations increase in 2025, driven by strong December performance

Romania’s new passenger car market recorded moderate growth in 2025, supported by a sharp rise in registrations toward the end of the year, according to preliminary data published by the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers in Romania (APIA).

New car registrations increased by 4.7% compared with 2024, reaching a total of 155,855 vehicles. The strongest momentum was observed in December, when registrations climbed by 58.4% year on year to 21,203 units.

The growth, however, was uneven across powertrains. Fully electric vehicle registrations rose by only 1.4% compared with December 2024, totaling 1,354 units, suggesting that demand for battery-electric models remains subdued relative to the broader market.

Market leaders and model preferences

Dacia remained the leading brand in December, with 6,796 newly registered vehicles, well ahead of its competitors. Renault followed with 2,638 units, while Toyota ranked third with 1,704 registrations. Other brands with strong December volumes included Skoda, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Ford, KGM, MG and BMW.

At model level, the Dacia Duster topped the rankings with 2,195 registrations, closely followed by the Dacia Logan, which recorded 2,133 units. The Renault Clio also performed strongly, alongside other popular models such as the Dacia Sandero, Dacia Bigster and Dacia Jogger.

Among non-Dacia models, steady demand was reported for the Toyota Corolla, Skoda Octavia, Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4, reflecting continued consumer interest in compact family cars and sport utility vehicles.
