Guwahati: The killing of a 24-year-old student from Tripura in Dehradun has again sparked serious concerns over the safety of Northeastern people across India. Therefore, the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has sought urgent intervention from the Uttarakhand government.
NESO, which represents eight major student organisations in the region, submitted a memorandum to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. It demanded strict punishment for the culprits and stronger systems to tackle racial violence and discrimination.
AASU president Utpal Sarma said the murder of Angel Chakma has deeply shocked the community. He added that it has also raised worrying questions about the safety of Northeastern citizens.
“We offer our deepest condolences. At the same time, we express our strong anger. This incident shows how dangerous racist thinking can be. Even in Assam, indigenous people face insults and are called ‘Chinese’. If such forces are not dealt with firmly, racism will only grow. The government’s indifferent attitude is unacceptable,” Sarma wrote on X.
According to the memorandum, Angel Chakma was beaten and stabbed in Dehradun on December 9 and allegedly faced racial abuse. He fought for his life for more than two weeks and passed away on December 26. His brother, Michael Chakma, was also attacked in the same incident. NESO said the assault appeared racially motivated and reflected a troubling pattern of harassment against Northeastern people.
NESO strongly condemned the incident. It demanded capital punishment for the accused, a special police station in Uttarakhand to deal with racial discrimination cases, and a strict anti-racism law.
Moreover, the organisation urged the Uttarakhand government to ensure mental, social, and physical security for Northeastern students and residents. It also called for immediate and decisive steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
