In a moving tribute to legendary Assamese singer, composer, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, a group of senior musicians who worked closely with him for decades have announced the formation of a new musical band titled JONTRO. The initiative marks a collective effort to honour the life, music, and enduring legacy of one of Assam’s most influential artists.
The band includes Partha, Raja, Diganta, Dipkesh, Priyanku, Rishav, and Anjan, musicians who were not just collaborators but an integral part of Zubeen Garg’s musical journey over the years. Having shared countless performances, recordings, and creative moments with the maestro, the members said their decision to come together again was driven by deep respect, emotional bonding, and a strong sense of responsibility to preserve his music.
Describing JONTRO as a tribute band, the members clarified that it will perform exclusively songs sung, written, or composed by Zubeen Garg. The focus, they said, will be on maintaining the authenticity, emotional depth, and original musical arrangements that defined his work.
“For a long time, we were an inseparable part of Zubeen Garg’s musical life. Even today, it is difficult to accept that he is no longer with us. His absence has left a void that can never truly be filled. However, life must go on, and the least we can do in his memory is preserve and present his songs and music in their true spirit,” the members said in a joint statement.
The band will also feature renowned Assamese singer Rupam Bhuyan, adding further strength to the ensemble. According to the group, his inclusion will help enrich live performances while remaining true to Zubeen Garg’s musical essence.
Beyond paying tribute, JONTRO also carries a forward-looking vision. The band plans to actively encourage and nurture new talent by introducing two emerging singers, one male and one female. These singers will be mentored and groomed under the guidance of senior musicians before being formally presented to audiences, ensuring a careful and respectful passing of musical heritage to the next generation.
The members emphasised that their effort is not merely about remembrance, but about continuity, keeping Zubeen Garg’s music alive on stage, through live performances, and in the collective memory of the people.
Appealing for public support, the band sought blessings and encouragement from music lovers across Assam and the Northeast. “The love and support of the people will give us strength. Their encouragement will help us preserve and celebrate the immortal music of Zubeen Garg,” they said.
The formation of JONTRO stands as both an emotional and artistic tribute, reflecting the deep bond shared between Zubeen Garg and his long-time co-artistes, while ensuring that his timeless music continues to inspire generations to come.
