A 21-member Asom Gana Parishad ministry will be sworn in by the Governor, Bhishma Narain Singh, in Guwahati. The appointment of 20 ministers was made by the Governor on the recommendations of Prafulla Mahanta, Chief Minister-designate. Mahanta submitted the list of his council of ministers to the Governor.
Pakistan may lift martial law
The Pakistan cabinet discussed the modalities of lifting the eight-year-old martial law in the country, according to Radio Pakistan. The meeting, presided over by the Pakistan Prime Minister, Mohammad Khan Junejo, also discussed the document providing for the scrapping of martial law. According to reports, martial law might be lifted on December 25, the birth anniversary of Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Laldenga meets PM
The Mizo National Front (MNF) chief, Laldenga, met with Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and discussed with him the issues relating to an agreement for ending the insurgency in Mizoram and finding an amicable political solution. Laldenga told PTI after his brief meeting with Gandhi that the talks were “very good and cordial. We are hopeful,” he added. UNI added: The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs met and is understood to have considered the provisions of an agreement under discussion with Laldenga.
RBI report on Escorts case
The Union Government is awaiting the report of the Reserve Bank on the follow-up steps to be taken in the light of the Supreme Court judgment in the Escorts case. According to informed sources, while the policy of the Government to encourage non-resident Indian investments in Indian companies will continue, some safeguards, in the form of procedural or policy changes, could be considered only after the Reserve Bank completes investigations into the Escorts share purchases by the Caparo Group, as ordered by the Supreme Court.
