Shefa Health Warns Public to Avoid Strong Sun During Hot Weather

Health authorities are warning the public to avoid exposure to strong sunlight, especially between 11:00am and 3:00pm, as extreme heat can cause illness.

In a health message released by the Shefa Health Office, the public is advised to be aware of signs of heat-related sickness such as dizziness, thirst, headaches, weakness and confusion.

If someone experiences heat exhaustion, they should move to a cool place, lie down, remove heavy clothing and drink plenty of water.

Shefa Health is encouraging people to wear hats and sunglasses, use sunscreen, and carry out heavy physical activities only in the early morning or late afternoon to protect the body from strong sun exposure.

Some members of the public in Port Vila say the advice is important.
A woman in town said, “The heat is very strong, so I try to drink plenty of water and avoid the sun at midday.”
Another man said, “Those of us who work outdoors need to take good care of our bodies.”

Shefa Health also advises people to drink plenty of water every day and not wait until they feel thirsty.

The public is further warned against excessive consumption of alcohol, coffee, sugary drinks and kava, as these can cause the body to lose water quickly.

Health officials say following these simple health tips can help protect lives during periods of hot weather.
