PM Modi lays foundation stone of ammonia-urea fertiliser plant at Namrup

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the Ammonia–Urea Fertiliser Project of Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited at Namrup in Dibrugarh district, marking a major step toward industrial expansion in Upper Assam.

Addressing a large gathering, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Assam’s rich legacy of bravery and sacrifice, recalling iconic figures such as Chaolung Sukapha and Lachit Borphukan. He also remembered Bhimbar Deuri, martyr Kushal Konwar, Moran king Bodousa, Malati Mem, Indira Miri, Swargadeo Sarbananda Singha and the courageous Sati Sadhani, stating that he bows to the sacred land of Ujani Assam, renowned for its valour.

Modi noted the massive turnout at the event and said he could feel the affection of the people. He made special mention of the presence of women, describing the warmth of their blessings as exceptional. He added that many of them carried the fragrance of Assam’s tea gardens, which, he said, symbolises his deep emotional bond with the state. Expressing gratitude, he thanked the people for their love and support.

Calling the day historic for Assam and the entire Northeast, the Prime Minister said the long-cherished aspirations of Namrup and Dibrugarh had finally been realised, ushering in a new phase of industrial growth. He pointed out that earlier in the day he had inaugurated the new terminal at Guwahati airport before performing the bhoomi pujan for the fertiliser plant, observing that Assam has clearly entered a faster trajectory of development.

Modi stressed that the developments witnessed were only the beginning and said Assam must advance much further. Recalling the prominence Assam enjoyed during the Ahom era, he asserted that the state would play an equally decisive role in a developed India.

He highlighted rapid progress across sectors, including the establishment of new industries, expansion of modern infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, fresh opportunities in agriculture, improvements in tea gardens and workers’ welfare, and the growing scope of tourism. He said Assam is steadily moving forward on all fronts.

Extending his best wishes for the upcoming fertiliser plant, Modi also congratulated the people of Assam on the inauguration of the new Guwahati airport terminal. He said the combined efforts of the Union and state governments in strengthening industry and connectivity are helping fulfil Assam’s aspirations and motivating the youth to dream bigger.

Emphasising the importance of farmers in building a developed nation, the Prime Minister said the government places farmers’ interests at the centre of its policies and continues to expand farmer-friendly schemes. He underlined the need for uninterrupted availability of fertilisers and said the new urea plant would play a critical role in ensuring that supply.

Modi announced that the fertiliser project will see an investment of around ?11,000 crore and will have an annual production capacity of over 12 lakh metric tonnes. He added that local production will speed up availability, reduce logistics costs and provide long-term benefits to farmers across the region.
