Deepor Beel tree felling plan triggers concern amid railway flyover push

Guwahati: Deepor Beel, Assam’s only Ramsar site, has triggered rising environmental concern after authorities marked more than a hundred trees for felling to make way for an elevated railway flyover. The proposed project includes a nearly 5-km-long, 21-foot-high railway bridge that will replace the existing track running close to the wetland.

Officials say the present railway alignment has proved dangerous for wildlife, especially wild elephants, with around 15 elephant deaths reported in recent years due to train collisions. They assert that the flyover aims to ensure safer passage for animals and reduce human–animal conflict.

While many have welcomed the intention to protect wildlife, the large-scale tree marking has alarmed residents, environmentalists and small traders who depend on the area’s natural environment. Locals consider the trees around Deepor Beel crucial for the ecosystem, as they provide nesting space for birds, support biodiversity and attract tourists.

Conservationist Pramod Kalita said the project carries a positive purpose but expressed concern over the extent of proposed tree cutting. “The flyover will benefit both humans and animals, but cutting so many trees is what we are worried about. These trees support tourism and shelter many bird species,” he said.

Kalita also pointed out that an RTI response suggested authorities should cut trees only when absolutely necessary and consider alternatives like translocation. However, locals allege that agencies are not following such safeguards, as long stretches of trees now carry felling marks.

Residents and shop owners fear that losing greenery will directly hit their livelihoods. Many depend on visitors drawn to the wetland’s scenic beauty, and they worry declining tourist footfall could force businesses to shut down.

Local resident Nagen B said the move could permanently damage the charm of Deepor Beel. “These trees preserve the beauty of Deepor Beel. If authorities cut them, the natural appeal will vanish, tourism will drop, and people depending on this place will suffer,” he said, while urging authorities to ensure replantation if removal becomes unavoidable.

Environmentalists and locals have appealed to railway authorities and the Forest Department to explore alternative construction methods to minimise tree felling and protect the wetland’s ecological balance.

Responding to the concerns, a railway official defended the project and said the department is executing the work under development initiatives and court directives.

“We have already witnessed enough elephant deaths due to rail crossings. This overpass will resolve that issue. We decided, along with the Forest Department, to cut only trees that are absolutely necessary,” the official said, adding that authorities will carry out compensatory plantation after construction.

He further stated that the project is expected to be completed within six months and will benefit both wildlife conservation and rail-based economic activity in the region.
