A short documentary about the late Arkansas documentarian Brent Renaud, who was shot and killed in March 2022 while reporting on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has been shortlisted for an Oscar.
“Armed Only With a Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud,” released by HBO in October, is one of 15 films up for consideration in the Documentary Short Film category of the Academy Awards. 117 films qualified in the category, and five will be nominated for an Oscar. Renaud shares a directing credit with his brother and primary collaborator, Craig Renaud, for the film, which features footage from their large body of humanitarian documentary work.
The 98th Academy Awards take place on March 15 and will be hosted by Conan O’Brien.
