Parliament will reconvene in its 2025 Second Ordinary Session this Friday to debate Motion Number 9 of 2025, lodged by the Opposition against Prime Minister Jotham Napat.
This follows the Court of Appeal upholding the Supreme Court’s ruling, which found that Speaker Stephen Felix acted against the law when declared that the motion was not in order and close the Second Ordinary Session.
The Court of Appeal dismissed the Speaker’s appeal and ruled that the Speaker had received and registered the motion.
Following the court decision, the Speaker of Parliament issued a notice confirming that the second ordinary session will resume at 10:30am on Friday morning.
Meanwhile, five leaders of political parties that form the government have reaffirmed their support for the leadership of Prime Minister Jotham Napat.
The leaders met yesterday to give assurances to the Prime Minister ahead of the motion that Parliament will debate on Friday.
The leaders include Graon mo Jasits Party, Vanua’aku Party, Iauko Group, and RMC.
Prime Minister Napat said the Speaker of Parliament has already issued the notice and that his coalition partners met to give reassurance to the government. He thanked all party presidents present for showing solidarity and for reassuring the Republic of Vanuatu, especially as the country approaches the end of the year when stability is important.
The coalition originally started with 40 members.
However, after Seule Simion lost his seat, the number dropped to 39, as the new Member of Parliament for Epi has not yet been sworn in.
On the Opposition side, Leader Ismael Kalsakau said he is confident in the support he has.
