The United States Issues Another Security Alert Due to the ‘Dangerous Situation’ in Venezuela

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a safety alert on Tuesday, December 16, warning of a “potentially dangerous” situation in the Maiquetía Flight Information Region (FIR), which covers Venezuelan airspace and adjacent areas.  According to Notam Kicz A0015/25, the FAA recommended that air operators exercise extreme caution when operating in the Maiquetía FIR (SVZM) at all altitude levels, due to deteriorating safety conditions and increased military activity in or around Venezuela.  The agency noted that these threats could pose a potential risk to aircraft, both during over flights and during arrival and departure phases, as well as to aircraft and airports on the ground.

The advisory urges U.S. civil aviation operators to consult additional information on security threats in the affected airspace through the FAA’s official website, and to notify at least 72 hours in advance of any planned flights entering this region, providing specific details of the operation.  The FAA also requested that any security incidents observed or experienced during operations in the Maiquetía FIR be reported to the agency’s Washington Operations Center.  The alert will be in effect from December 16, 2025 to February 19, 2026, according to the official document, and comes in a context of growing regional tension and recent reports of military operations in the Caribbean and areas near Venezuelan territory.  So far, there has been no official reaction from Venezuelan aeronautical authorities to this warning issued by the FAA.
