A shooting that occurred on Saturday on the campus of Brown University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the United States, has left two dead and nine injured, all students, according to local authorities. By the end of the day, the shooter had not yet been apprehended.

Among the nine injured individuals, eight were seriously injured but were in stable condition, said Providence Mayor Brett Smiley during a press conference. The city is the capital of the state of Rhode Island, located in the northeast of the country. A significant emergency response was mobilized, including several medical helicopters to evacuate the most severely injured victims to specialized centers in the region.

The families of the students involved were informed gradually, causing great concern in many households. “Unfortunately, this is a day that the city of Providence and the state of Rhode Island prayed would never come,” said Brett Smiley, referring to the recurring gun violence in the United States.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee also reacted, stating: “Our academic community is grieving, but it will show resilience.” In the evening, spontaneous vigils took place around the campus, where students and teachers gathered to pay tribute to the victims.
