Torrential rains cause huge floods, 37 deaths reported

In Morocco, torrential rains caused violent floods in the city of Safi on the Atlantic coast, 250 kilometers south of Casablanca, in the late afternoon of December 14, 2025. According to local authorities, 37 people have died, making this event the worst disaster of this kind to occur in the country in at least ten years.

The city of 300,000 inhabitants was hit by a flash flood. Thunderstorms hit Safi, causing brutal floods in just one hour. Footage filmed by residents shows streets turned into muddy rivers, sweeping everything in their path.

In addition to the deaths, several injuries were reported, with 32 people transferred to the hospital. According to authorities, most were able to leave after receiving necessary care and treatment. A resident contacted by RFI explains that the river flowing through the city overflowed. The most affected neighborhoods are the medina and the old quarters of Safi. Late on Sunday evening, the water level had already dropped, leaving behind a landscape of devastation: mud, overturned cars, and debris.

Auxiliary forces and civil protection were working to clear the still submerged debris. Searches continue to find any missing persons, while authorities strive to provide support and assistance to the affected populations. According to some residents, the death toll could still rise.
