At least 21 people died on Sunday in exceptional flash floods. The floods were caused by heavy rains in the coastal Safi province. This region is located on the Atlantic Ocean. It is about 330 kilometers south of the Moroccan capital, Rabat.
Local authorities in Safi province issued a statement. They said the floods also injured 32 people. Most of the injured have left the hospital after receiving treatment. A few cases remain under medical observation.
The authorities added that the heavy rainfall lasted less than one hour. It flooded approximately 70 homes and shops. The water swept away 10 cars. Several roads in the city of Safi and its suburbs were also cut off. They noted that rescue efforts are ongoing.
