Amsterdam remains in pole position as the most popular city for retail shopping, a survey by real estate advisor CBRE has shown.
The pricey PC Hooftstraat and Van Baerlestraat, and the Kalverstraat totted up the most national and international visitors, according to the survey, while outside the capital area, Eindhoven’s main drag De Demer was most popular.
The Eindhoven shopping street has a mix of high street staples, such as Rituals and sports and clothing chains, which make for steady visitor numbers, CBRE said. Unusually for city centres, it also has few shops standing empty.
Rotterdam is coming to the forefront as well, with the popular De Hoogstraat as the main shopping magnet and the up-and-coming Lijnbaan in second place.
The Oudegracht in Utrecht, which has been attracting international retailers such as Uniqlo, has been doing better than the Steenweg, which has been losing customers to the Hoog Catharijne shopping mall.
Shoppers in The Hague still wended their way mostly to the Spuistraat, while the Grote Marktstraat has been suffering from the competition at the Mall of the Netherlands in nearby Leidschendam, CBRE said.
