Madurai Police launched searches at the Sikandar Durgah atop Thirupparankundram hill, the District Collector’s office, and the District Court on Thursday after receiving a bomb threat email.
Bomb squads were deployed, and teams combed the locations following the alert. Police later confirmed that the threat was a hoax.
This comes a day after police were issued a similar bomb threat for the Sikandar Dargah, Madurai Collectorate and district court on Wednesday.
Madurai City Police told news agency ANI that the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad conducted a detailed search yesterday at both the hilltop dargah and the Kasi Viswanathar Temple on the rear side of the hill. No explosives were found, and the email was declared a hoax.
The incidents come amid a simmering controversy over the lighting of a traditional lamp atop Thirupparankundram hill, where disputes between religious groups and authorities have escalated in recent days.
A legal and political battle has erupted over a Madras High Court order to light the Karthigai Deepam on a stone pillar near the dargah, a move opposed by the state government and which has sparked protests and political clashes.
