An EU award recognising localities leading in promoting diversity has opened for applications.
The fifth annual edition of the European Capital of Inclusion and Diversity Award focuses on equal opportunities in the workplace and in the wider labour market.
A statement announcing the competition opening described the award as “an opportunity for local authorities to showcase policies and initiatives that create more diverse and inclusive spaces for all”.
Local authorities are invited to apply for the award, with applications open until the end of January. The winners will be announced by the European Commission at a Brussels event in April, welcoming mayors, national officials and policymakers.
The award, which recognises bronze, silver and gold winners, is divided into two categories: Localities with fewer than 50,000 inhabitants, and those with more.
This time will see an award dedicated to inclusive labour markets.
The award “recognises towns, cities and regions of all sizes that harness the power of diversity and foster inclusive communities through their innovative initiatives, policies and programmes”, the statement read.
“By celebrating those who promote diversity and inclusion, we help raise standards and inspire others to foster environments where everyone can thrive.”
Applications can be submitted at the official website, with shortlisted candidates set to be announced on the same site. The award ceremony will take place on April 21.
This year’s winners include Utrecht (Netherlands), Bilbao (Spain), Kraków (Poland), Mariehamn (Åland, Finland), Usurbil (Spain), Settimo Torinese (Italy), Braga (Portugal), Gualdo Tadino (Italy) and Zaragoza (Spain).
