Georgia holds meeting on establishing protected areas in Kakheti

Georgia: A working meeting was held with the local government regarding the creation of new protected territories in the Kakheti region on Friday, December 5, 2025.

The Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia shared the glimpses of the meeting on its official Facebook Page on December 5, 2025, Friday. The Georgian Agency also shared a small note about the meeting along with its glimpses.

The meeting was held in the administration of the State Trustee in Kakheti, where representatives of the Protected Areas Agency discussed the issue of establishing new protected areas in the region. The meeting was attended by Besik Amiranashvili, Chairman of the Protected Territories Agency, and Kakheti State Trustee Giorgi Aladashvili.

During the discussion, officials emphasized the need to preserve Kakheti’s natural heritage for future generations. They highlighted that rapid urbanization and increasing human activity make it essential to expand protected zones to safeguard wildlife and maintain ecological balance.

In the Kakheti region, Gurjaani, Telavi, and Sagarejo municipalities, research works were carried out on 22,000 hectares. The specially designed group assessed biodiversity, landscape characteristics, and other important natural values.

The research confirmed that the survey areas fully meet the criteria required for establishing a national park and protected landscape in the region. Creating a new protected area on Tsivgombori ridge will significantly strengthen the network of protected areas.

The Kakheti region is distinguished by its natural and landscape diversity. The protected areas in the region are very popular and attract thousands of visitors annually, making them one of the main tourist attractions in Kakheti.

It is noteworthy that the creation of protected areas contributes significantly to improving the ecological condition, developing ecotourism in the region, and popularizing it at the international level. Along with that, residents are being provided with additional economic benefits and new employment opportunities.
