Bishop Athenagoras to be enthroned in Canberra on 6 December

The Archdiocese of Australia has announced that the official enthronement of the newly appointed Bishop of Canberra, Athenagoras, will take place on Saturday, 6 December.

The ceremony will be held at the celebrating Church of St Nicholas in Canberra, located at Wentworth Avenue and Telopea Park in Kingston. Preceding the enthronement, a Synodal Divine Liturgy will begin at 7.30am, presided over by Archbishop Makarios of Australia.

According to the Holy Eparchial Synod, the event marks an important moment for the local Greek Orthodox community, which is preparing to welcome its new spiritual leader with great joy.

“The faithful are warmly invited to participate in this significant spiritual celebration for our local Church,” the Synod said in its announcement.

The enthronement of Bishop Athenagoras marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Canberra district, which has seen continuous growth in its Greek Orthodox population in recent years. Community members are expected to gather in large numbers to witness the historic occasion.

Further details regarding the liturgy and ceremonial proceedings will be shared by the Archdiocese as the date approaches.
